Datuk Seri Najib Razak meminta rakyat supaya terus menyokong kerajaan BN bagi memastikan visi menjadikan Malaysia negara maju dapat dicapai sepenuhnya.

Perdana Menteri berkata negara memerlukan kepimpinan kuat dan berkebolehan bagi merealisasikan aspirasi Malaysia menjadi negara berstatus maju serta berpendapatan tinggi.

"Pembangkang boleh menawarkan anda matahari, bulan malah galaksi tetapi ini seolah mencabar kebijaksanaan anda.

"Tetapi saya pasti, sekarang anda dapat membezakan perkara yang baik untuk negara dan apa yang boleh dicapai oleh negara," katanya ketika berucap pada majlis Perdana Menteri Bersama Rakyat 1Malaysia Parlimen Sandakan dan Batu Sapi di Sandarakan, Jumaat malam.

Katanya negeri-negeri yang ditadbir oleh pembangkang seperti Selangor gagal menunaikan janji 32-perkara pada pilihan raya lepas termasuk pengurangan cukai tanah dan elaun bulanan kepada golongan ibu tunggal.

Najib berkata kerajaan Kedah dan Kelantan tidak banyak membawa perubahan manakala pelaburan di Pulau Pinang ketika ini merupakan syarikat yang pernah melabur ketika pemerintahan kerajaan BN di negeri itu.

Bagaimanapun, katanya, kerajaan BN mempunyai agenda jelas dalam hala tuju negara dan rekod pencapaian kepimpinan BN sudah teruji semasa krisis ekonomi pada tahun 2009.

Katanya ada pemimpin negara yang keluar daripada kerajaan BN kini menjanjikan pelbagai perubahan untuk rakyat namun tidak melakukan sebarang perubahan ketika masih berkuasa sebelum ini.

Menurut Najib pemimpin berkenaan ketika berada dalam BN menyokong segala langkah kerajaan pada ketika itu namun selepas berada di luar kerajaan, suara pemimpin berkenaan sudah berubah dengan menentang keputusan mereka sendiri dahulu.

Misalnya, Najib berkata Program Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) yang diperkenalkan oleh beliau ketika menjadi menteri pelajaran disokong oleh pemimpin pembangkang yang ketika itu Menteri Kewangan namun hari ini beliau sendiri yang menentangnya.

Malah, katanya pemimpin pembangkang Lim Kit Siang dan Lim Guan Eng turut menyokong penubuhan PTPTN dengan mengundinya di Parlimen.

Justeru itu, Najib mengingatkan rakyat supaya tidak menyokong pemimpin yang sentiasa berubah pendirian sebaliknya menyokong pemimpin yang meletakan kepentingan rakyat daripada segalanya.

Gerakan to finalise candidate list Friday

KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 (Bernama) -- Gerakan will finalise its list of candidates by Friday when the party's Central Working Committee meets to discuss on the possible candidates for 12 parliamentary and 31 state seats.

Deputy President Datuk Chang Ko Youn said the party had for the past few weeks been meeting its state leaders to prepare the list, including screening of the potential candidates by a group of people with no vested interest.

"We will have the CWC meeting on Friday night to discuss the list. However, I don't think it will be announced so soon as the list needs to be submitted to the BN top leadership for consideration," he told Bernama when contacted.

The party suffered its worst electoral defeat in the 2008 general election, retaining only two of the 12 parliamentary seats and four out of the 31 state seats it contested nationwide.

Not only that, the party also lost every seat in its home ground, Penang after governing the state for almost 39 years.

However, for this coming elections, the party is expected to put in extra effort to regain some of the seats in Penang.

Gerakan is expected to contest four parliamentary and 13 state seats in Penang, with 30 names submitted to the party leadership, of which 18 comprise newcomers while the rest are incumbents.

Jail term on shoe throwing ex Imam upheld

PUTRAJAYA, April 16 (Bernama) -- The Federal Court here today upheld the one-year jail sentence on former imam Hoslan Husin who was found guilty of contempt of court for throwing his shoes at a Federal Court bench.
A five-man panel chaired by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum unanimously dismissed his application to review the decision of the Federal Court's previous panel which found him guilty and sentenced him to a year's jail.
Justice Malanjum said Hoslan's application was for a review under Rule 137 of the Rules of the Federal Court 1995 where there was a requirement in law for Hoslan to pass the threshold to show issue of injustice for his review application to be allowed.
"Unfortunately, the threshold has not been crossed. There is no legal impediment of the previous Federal Court panel," he said in disagreement with the submission by lawyer Tommy Thomas, representing the Malaysian Bar, that the previous three-man Federal Court panel whom Hoslan had hurled his shoes at, was not the proper panel to hear his contempt matter.
Federal Court judge Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong, Datuk Ahmad Maarop, Datuk Zainun Ali and Datuk Seri Sulong Matjeraie were the other four judges presiding on the panel.

No more passes for party supporters,says EC

SIBU: The Election Commission (EC) will no longer issue passes to party supporters to accompany candidates to nomination centres on nomination day.

EC chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said this is to discourage the practice of having hundreds of supporters accompanying the nominees.

“In the past we used to issue 100 passes for supporters of each political party, provide tents and refreshments for them. We’ve decided not to give them passes this time,” he told
reporters yesterday at the 13th general election briefing for returning officers (ROs) and assistant returning officers (AROs).

A total of 79 ROs and AROs from 15 parliamentary constituencies in the central region attended the two-day briefing.

Abdul Aziz said there was no positive correlation between the number of supporters at the nomination centres and the winning chances of the candidates.

“Political parties say that is the time to show their strength. But from our observation, it is not necessary.

“We want to avoid clashes among the supporters of the political divide, and to ensure a peaceful situation,” he explained.

In January, Abdul Aziz said the EC wanted to stop the “party atmosphere” created by hundreds of supporters showing up on nomination day.

He was reported then as saying that only 10 supporters and representatives would be allowed on nomination day at each nomination centre.

Penyangak bola sepak ditahan

KUCHING: Dua beradik ditahan petang semalam berhubung serangan yang mengakibatkan seorang anggota Unit Tindakan Rusuhan Awam (PORU) cedera parah di bahagian mulut selepas perlawanan bola sepak Sarawak menentang Kelantan.

Kedua-duanya diberkas di kediaman mereka di Jalan Bayor Bukit, Tabuan Jaya sekitar jam 6 petang.

Suspek-suspek yang merupakan adik-beradik itu masing-masing berumur 28 dan 30 tahun.

Mereka ditahan selepas mengakibatkan seorang anggota PORU cedera teruk di bahagian mulut apabila dibelasah secara bertubi-tubi di Stadium Negeri, di sini malam kelmarin.

Timbalan Ketua Polis Daerah Kuching (KPD) Superintenden Pauzi Bujang ketika dihubungi Utusan Borneo yang enggan mengulas dengan lebih lanjut memberitahu kes itu sedang disiasat.

“Kami (polis) tidak dapat memberi sebarang komen (sehingga siasatan selesai),” katanya.

Dalam insiden yang berlaku sejurus perlawanan tamat, dua anggota PORU cuba meleraikan pergaduhan antara penyokong Sarawak dan Kelantan.

Bagaimanapun, ia berakhir dengan keadaan ngeri apabila dua penyokong bertindak ganas dengan menumbuk salah seorang anggota FRU bertubi-tubi sehingga pengsan.

Bagaimanapun, cubaan anggota PORU lain untuk memberi bantuan kepada rakannya yang dalam keadaan tidak sedarkan diri dihalang oleh salah seorang penyerang.

Kekecohan itu terjadi apabila sekumpulan penyokong kedua-dua pasukan bola sepak Sarawak dan Kelantan saling berperang mulut sebelum pergaduhan terjadi.

Kira-kira 30 anggota dikejarkan ke kawasan tempat duduk penonton bagi meleraikan pergaduhan sebelum ia menjadi lebih teruk.

Mangsa seterusnya dikejarkan oleh unit ambulans Jabatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (JPAM) ke Hospital Umum Sarawak (HUS) untuk rawatan lanjut.

Menurut cadangan mekanisme pemansuhan PTPTN yang dikemukakan oleh Pengarah Operasi Pusat Penyelidikan PAS (PPP), Dr. Zuhdi Marzuki, SINI anda digalakkan mencari kerja sambilan bagi menampung kos sara hidup masing-masing.

Rasionalisasi cadangan ini menurut beliau, antara lain supaya negara dapat mengurangkan kebergantungan terhadap pekerja asing dan pada masa yang sama, dapat mendidik mahasiswa-mahasiswi berdikari.

Logikkah cadangan ini? Fikirkan. Dalam pada PTPTN masih ada pun sudah ramai antara kita yang terpaksa berkerja sambilan kerana tak cukup duit, inikan pula selepas ia dimansuhkan. Anda setuju atau tidak? Tepuk dada tanyalah diri sendiri.

The government shines a light on its transformation programme of the last three years
AT no other three-year period has the government of Malaysia been as busy. And Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has a detailed statement of accounts on which he has asked to be judged. Last year's  reports on the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) clearly speak of a National Transformation Policy  that is on track to meet the challenges of the present and future. Under its driving philosophy of "1Malaysia: People First, Performance Now", the three-pronged aim of strengthening the solidarity of plural Malaysia, developing  a government delivery system which prioritises the aspirations of the people,  and escaping  the middle-income trap, are looking very achievable. What makes it all credible is that the reports are proper audits of the progress made thus far. In the honesty and industry of their presentation on Monday evening, one cannot but agree with Najib that it would be a mistake to change the driver of  this  transformation juggernaut at this juncture.
As he reminded his fellow citizens, the country will be facing the 13th general election soon in a global economic milieu of uncertainty and inflationary pressure. That the population, however, is moving on regardless is largely thanks to an official policy of giving top priority to managing the cost of living so that inflation, while real, does not overburden the average worker and consumer. Here is an example of how effective the GTP is; a fact largely due to its construct, which focuses the government's mind and muscle on seven National Key Result Areas (NKRA), led by a toolkit to tackle rising prices. Following closely is crime reduction, where street crimes have almost been halved. Enhancing student performance, the third NKRA, has seen the realisation of free schooling and an emphasis on early education. Upgrading rural infrastructure and the other three NKRAs have also had measurable impacts. The Key Performance Indicators quantify all of the result areas.
On the economic front, the world has been supplied proof of the government's success. The ETP has improved Malaysia's international ranking as among the world's top countries for the ease of starting and running a business. It is rising in the World Economic Competitiveness list. Investment is flowing into the country, given that it is one of the top 10 countries in the Foreign Direct Investment Confidence Index for this year. These are hard facts, not pie in the sky. With the engagement of the electorate, Najib's aim of a growing per capita income, reaching Vision 2020's target of US$15,000 (RM45,750), becomes a real possibility.
