Hisham files suit against Anwar latest!
KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has filed a defamation suit against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for slander against him in connection with the sex video featuring someone resembling the opposition leader.
Hishammuddin filed the suit last April 26 through Zul Rafique & Partners in the new civil High Court here. The media obtained the writ of the suit through a file search.
In his statement of claims, Hishammuddin said that Anwar uttered defamatory words against him during an interview with the media last March 22 after lodging a report on the video with the Dang Wangi police here.
Hishammuddin, 50, said the words were widely reported in the media and the Internet and were understood to mean that he was responsible for screening the video to a group of editors and journalists at Carcosa Seri Negara Hotel last March 21.
The minister said the words were also understood to mean that he arranged for the screening of the video and plotted with the Prime Minister and the police top brass to have it done.
Last April 8, he said, his counsel wrote to Anwar asking him to withdraw his statement to the media and issue an apology ensuring that he did not repeat the words uttered.
On April 22, Anwar, through his lawyer, denied that the words were defamatory.
Hishammuddin said the publication of the words had caused aggravated damage to his personal and professional reputation and to his position as Home Minister in the eyes of Malaysians.
He said that publication of the defamatory words had resulted in him being brought into public scandal and odium, apart from causing aggravated damage to his personal and professional reputation.
Hishammuddin is asking for general, aggravated and exemplary damages and an injunction to stop Anwar or his agent from publishing or continuing to publish the defamatory words.
The court has set May 25 for mention of the case before Judicial Commissioner Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera. – Bernama
